A few short years ago? How about 160? Joseph Smith actually was for abolishing slavery back then! It wasn't until Brigham Young was the prophet that the church didn't allow blacks the priesthood. But, that didn't mean they couldn't go to church, they could, but just not recieve the priesthood. Why? Well, I'm not too sure, but it might have been something to do with keeping the priesthood with one race, or ethnicity (kind of like how jews married people inside the covenant and excluded non-jews, etc.) for a time until it was okay. (Just read the King James Bible!)
It probably has something to do with everytime an apostasy ended, and Earth recieved the gospel again. And I guess that because we believe we are the restored church, or contuation of the priesthood that Jesus restored. {which is what we call the melchezediek preisthood}

Umm... I don't represent the church per se... so go to mormon.org if you really want to know. And also, there are very few churches in history that didn't have segregation at one time.
